HOW TO LEARN BONDS OF 10 WITH THE NEWMERO BRICKS
Place all the yellow bricks (1-9) on the table with the numbers facing up.
Tell your child that all bricks have a “special friend”. When these two (friends) bricks find each other they add up to 10.
BONDS OF 10
Take two bricks up, that add up to 10: you say, for example “this is 8 and its special friend is 2”.
First show that by placing the bricks side by side, the edges match perfectly.
NOT BONDS OF 10
You can show afterwards 1 and 7 don’t match since there is a gap on the sides of the bricks.

Do you need a smaller or bigger number to find the number Bonds to TEN?
The bricks show the child a gap. This means the 2-brick is not the 10-friend of 5, because it is too small. The child should look for a larger number.
Similarly, if the child had picked the 8-brick instead of the 2-brick, the “opposition” would show an overlap, telling the child that the 8-brick and the 5-bricks are not a Bonds to TEN because it is too large.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Our four-year-old son simply learned to do Bonds of 10 by puzzling the numbers together.
I wasn’t sure that he understood the meaning of the number Bonds to TEN. He enjoyed patiently fitting the bricks together until he matched the all the numbered bricks perfectly.
I asked my son if he knew why the fitted bricks were “Friends of TEN”? He simply answered that the numbers were “Best Friends”.
My son then told me a few weeks later out of the blue that we had 7 doors in our house. I answered him that I had never counted how many doors we had. He then added, if we add 3 doors, then we will have 10 doors in our house!
I then knew that he understood the number Bonds to TEN.
The bricks can also do number Bonds to 100 and number Bonds to 1000 games!
You can also learn the Place Value, Addition, patterns etc… with the newmero bricks.
